TV Wall Panel Design Ideas for Your Living Room
The TV wall is the most looked-at wall in many homes, so it is a common place for decorative panels. A few decisions made early will save rework later.
Decide how much of the wall to cover
- Behind the TV only: a panel slightly wider than the screen acts as a frame.
- Full wall: gives a more complete look, but needs more material and planning.
- Partial height or side panels: panels either side of the TV with a plain centre can look lighter.
Pick a design that does not fight the screen
When the TV is off it is a dark rectangle. Calm, repeating patterns such as fluted panels, wood tones or deep charcoal tend to work well. Strong colours and large patterns directly behind the screen can feel distracting while you watch.
Plan cables and power first
Decide where the TV, the set-top box and speakers will sit before the panels are fixed. Conduits and sockets are much easier to place before installation. If the TV will be wall-mounted, confirm how the bracket will be fixed and that the wall and panels are suitable for the load. Ask your installer rather than assuming.
Add lighting carefully
Soft background lighting behind or beside the TV can reduce eye strain compared with a dark wall and a bright screen. Strip lights near textured panels also show off the pattern. Keep light sources from reflecting on the screen.
Think about storage
Shelves, a floating unit or a console in front of the panel need to be planned together with the wall so that measurements line up.
Measure before you choose
Note the wall width and height, the TV size and any fixed items such as switches or windows. Our guide on measuring walls for panels explains how.
